What are you putting in your mouth?

Posted by Ask The Fitness Pro in July 9th 2010

Over the past week I had the opportunity to watch a lot of TV (not the best thing in the world to do…but I had the time.)

While flipping through the channels there was one thing I saw that grossed me out yet kept me glued to my seat wanting to see more. It was one of the most disgusting and most blatant examples of what a person should never, ever, EVER do if they want learn how to lose weight and keep their body remaining fit and healthy.

It was the Nathan’s 4th of July hot dog eating contest.  This event is like a car crash…you don’t want to look, but you can’t turn away either.

The winner consumed over 12,000 calories in a matter of minutes. This is definitely not an example of a healthy diet. (That’s an entire day’s worth of calories for world class swimmer Michael Phelps when he is training for events!)

But that got me thinking about how someone should be eating while they are at home.

WHAT’S IN YOUR KITCHEN?

As a fitness professional, I realize that not everyone has the same thought process as me when it comes to stocking your refrigerator with the healthiest foods.  So many people are on the go and need meals that are convenient for their busy lives. Everyone always wants to lose weight, but their actions determine if it will happen or not.

So my question to you is what’s in your kitchen?  What do you have in your refrigerator?  What food choices do you have that stock your cupboards?

It’s common knowledge that if you have junk food lying around, sooner or later it’s going to be eaten. SO GET RID OF IT!

I’m going to help you out by doing something for you that you’re probably not interested in really doing.  But if you are serious about eating properly and really want to start building good habits right away…You Need To Do This.

By the time you are done reading this post, you should have a kitchen that is “Junk Food Free”.

If You Stay Ready…You Don’t Have To Get Ready – Will Smith

So, the first thing I’m going to recommend you do is to throw out just about all the crap that gives you comfort…because it also gives you a very unhealthy body too.

The second thing is that you need to have a game plan.

I bet it’s safe to say that you are wasting over $100 bucks on garbage that offers no redeeming value to your health.  It’s not that you don’t know any better, but it’s just so damn hard to make it a habit of not buying the stuff in the first place.

In order to win the battle of the unsightly bulge that encircles your belt line you need to take control of what you are putting in your mouth.

That means…dare I say it…you need to start cooking your own food.

(Right about now I’ve probably turn off half my reading audience…but it’s important that every person knows the basic fundamentals of cooking simple, quick and healthy meals.  Trust me; it’s not that hard to do.)

Cooking For One

It’s time you learned all about “Cooking: 101”. You goal is to prepare food only two times per week and shop for healthy foods one time per week.

On the other days you will need only 30 minutes each morning to prepare your food for that day. (If you can’t manage 30 minutes in the morning, take 30 minutes in the evening…Just turn off the TV and you’ll have the time.)

A good idea is to also purchase some Tupperware® and CorningWare® bowls that will make it convenient to store your meals for each day.

On the days that you are cooking, a simple trick I’ve learned is to cut your meats (that includes, beef, chicken, and fish – great sources of protein) and vegetables into portion sizes that you will need for each day. Place each in the refrigerator after cooking. (Note: it’s not recommended to keep prepared food in your refrigerator more than three days.  So make sure you eat what you cook.)

Each day as you are getting ready to leave for work, you will already have your morning meal ready to reheat, your lunch time meal will be ready to be taken with you, and when you get home, your dinner will be waiting for you.

In order to achieve any possibility of long term success with managing your weight, what you have in your kitchen matters the most.
