Sugar is killing us all!

Posted by Ask The Fitness Pro in February 23rd 2012
Have you ever heard that saying, “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down”? We’ll you’re about to learn all about how poisonous sugar can be and how abundant it is in everything we eat and drink.
Check out this video and then look over the information below.
Can you imagine a day without soda, soft drinks, fruit juices or any other kinds of processed liquids that you find on your local grocer’s shelves? Well, the manufacturers hope you never do and they also hope you never read any sort of information I’m about to tell you.
Let’s face it…sugar tastes pretty damn good.  It’s in just about EVERYTHING we eat or drink. And it’s been around long before most of us have been alive.  And it will probably be here long after we die.
But it’s a poison that should be avoided or at least moderately consumed if at all.
Soda is one of the most readily available products that is mostly sugar based and it is widely consumed all hours of the day by more than half of the American population.
Basically, it’s just sugar and carbonated water with no real nutritional value.  And people love it!
But that’s only a minor consequence.
According to a recent Danish Study, researchers found that when people drank regular soda every day for 6 months, their liver fat was increased by over 100%.  Their skeletal fat was increased by over 200%.  And a 30% increase in both triglyceride blood fats and other organ fat occurred too.
And to make mattters even worse, their cholesterol increased more than people who drank other beverages such as water or milk.
Need a few more reasons to ‘can’ the soda habit?
The beautifully enticing artificial caramel coloring that’s added to soda like Pepsi and Coke to make the colas brown, has been petitioned by the Center for Science in Public Interest to be banned.  It’s claimed to contain two contaminants that have been found to cause cancer in animals.
Doctors from the Journal of Clinical Practice, warn that excessive amounts of soda can lead to anything from mild weakness to serious muscle paralysis.  This is caused because of the blood potassium levels dropping dangerously too low.
Of course the manufacturers insist that the products are ‘safe’ if consumed in moderation.  They put the blame on the consumer by saying that ‘ the soft drink industry encourages responsible consumption of all its products. And nutritional labeling is included on all packages so people can make an informed choice about how much to drink.
Look OLDER than you really are…
All sodas contain phosphates or phosphoric acid.  It’s a weak acid that gives a tangy flavor and improves the shelve life of the product.  If consumed in moderation, most people won’t have an issue with it.
But thanks to the “super sizing” craze, moderation is thrown right out the window.
Excessive phosphoric acid can lead to heart and kidney problems, muscle loss and osteoporosis.  AND…it has been shown to accelerate the aging process too.
Improve your smile too…
You’ve probably heard of the saying “ignore your teeth and they will go away.” Well, you don’t have to worry about that because soda can help.  Dentists have a round the clock task of reparing mouths full of cavities thanks to the chemicals found in most soft drinks.
A bottle of Mountain Dew has an ingredient called brominated vegetable oil (BVO) that’s added to prevent the flavoring from seperating from the drink.  This is actually an industrial chemical used as a flame retardant in plastics.
Whacked-Out Hormones…
Let’s not forget about the packaging this drink comes in. Nearly all sodas are in aluminum cans.  And these cans are lined with an epoxy resin called bisphenol A (BPA), that’s used to keep the acids from reacting to the aluminum.
This fascinating chemical has been known to interfere with hormones and has been linked to everything from diabetes, obesity, infertility and some forms of reproductive cancers.

Below is an example of how much sugar is in some of the drinks and foods we eat every day.

Here’s some tips to keep in mind:

1) Begin to remove yourself from the habit of drinking soda or any sugary drink everyday as your form of beverage.  Shoot for only a few times per week, if you are having a diffult time with it.

2) Be more aware of your craving for sugar.  Once that urge for caffeine or any type of sweet comes to mind, substitute it with either water for a beverage or fresh fruit or vegetables as a snack.

3) Read the nutrition labels and be aware of serving sizes and sugar content per serving.  Just seeing the information can be somewhat of a deterrent to cut down.

My goal of this post is to help you become more aware of the reality of how addictive sugar is and how unhealthy it is for your body.  A gradual weaning away from these poisonous products will help you slowly remove yourself from the soft drink roller coaster for good.
