Hi it’s Billy,
I just came back from 3 ½ exhausting days in Las Vegas, meeting with about 30 of the most successful, incredibly motivated fitness trainers in the country. I traveled all this way because I knew I was going to be able to pick their
brains on how to get better results out of people…how to get them healthier and how to get them to lead more productive lives.
But just walking to the hotel to the meeting was like a scene out of the twilight zone. Here I am looking forward to absorbing as much information, hints, tips and techniques as I could to help all of you that read this blog, and all I saw was walking zombies.
Now I know it’s the city that doesn’t sleep (or is that New York?)…either way, it doesn’t matter… The majority of people I bumped into while walking the crowded streets of Vegas looked like some of the most out of shape, unhealthy and as close to death people I’ve ever seen. (and this was even BEFORE I got in line for the food buffet in the hotel.)
Am I just crazy or is America getting fatter and unhealthier as a whole?
Keep reading below and you’ll find out that sugar is the main problem. It’s addictive and it’s unhealthy. I’ve even read that it’s been proven in laboratory tests to actually kill rats. They’ve literally eaten and drank so much of it because of its addictive qualities that they’ve actually exploded.
Maybe I’m sheltered because I live in this ‘protective bubble’ of good health and fitness here in Boca Raton, FL. Just about everywhere in this area are people who take care of themselves, watch what they eat, exercise and drink within moderation. Even the elderly are taking exercise classes or at the very minimum, walking up and down the streets for good health.
But the people in Las Vegas were scary. (I know what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas…but I sincerely hope it stays there too!)
Everywhere I looked were people stuffing their faces with the most unhealthy foods and drinks imaginable. And the sad thing was that since Las Vegas has become a sort of ‘family atmosphere’, with the exception of all those friendly “South of the border” people handing out those special baseball cards, (it’s an inside joke…if you’ve been there you know what I’m talking about)…many had their kids with them. And the kids were eating and drinking just as poorly.
But I guess you can’t blame the people…most have no idea what they are putting in their mouths in the first place thanks to all the neon signs, the bells, the whistles and flashing lights going on and off all day long. People get into a hypnotic trance and mindlessly munch on fast food that is so unhealthy.
I did a little research on some of the things that people were purchasing while partying and it amazed me, and I suspect will amaze you too.
Bad – Terrible – Worse?
Here’s a breakdown of the amount of calories in a lot of the foods and drinks I saw people shoving down their throats without a second thought. Notice that some of these are broken down into ounces. Most people are going to drink a lot more than an ounce of this, so try to calculate the excessive amount of empty calories:
Coffee (cream & sugar) 155 calories
Lemonade, 8 oz 120 calories
Apple juice, 8 oz 120 calories
Classic Coke, 8 oz 100 calories
Starbucks Large Cappuccino 150 calories
Starbucks Vanilla Crème Frappuccino 480 calories
Starbucks Tall latte 510 calories
Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha 510 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Caribbean Passion 440 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Cranberry Craze 460 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Orange Dream Machine 540 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Banana Berry 650 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Chocolate Moo 720 calories
Jamba Juice Smoothie Peeny Kowlada with “Power Boost” 960 calories
Champagne, 1 oz 25 calories
Wine, 1 oz 20 calories
Beer, 1 oz 12 calories
Alcohol, 1 oz 66 calories
Brandy, 1 oz 120 calories
Pina Colada, 1 oz 58 calories
Margarita, 1 oz 40 calories
As you can see, being aware of what you eat and drink can create tremendous havoc within your lives if you let it.
Here’s hoping you make better choices with your life!
Hey, please don’t forget to put a comment at the bottom of this post. Are you one of the people who takes in too many calories? Can you see yourself cutting down on the drinking now that you know how many calories you are taking in every time you order a drink? Let me know and maybe your actions can help others.
